On Eurodam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Westerdam, Oosterdam, Prinsendam,
Zuiderdam: Every single Stateroom has a cooler (HAL does not like to use
the word refrigerator as they don't get as cool as some medicines that
require "refrigeration" need... but they will get beverages cold...)
[
On the rest of the HAL fleet (and note the above says NIEUW
AMSTERDAM... NOT Amsterdam ) If it has a verandah, it has a cooler!

2713 on the Main deck of the Amsterdam. This
cabin is very roomy. It is MUCH bigger than other normal ocean view
cabins.....you can see the extra space between the end tables and the beds.
The hallway is also wider.
There is some vibration and noise.....like a white
noise consistently. I thought this was going to keep me awake but
I adapted to it....I am a VERY light sleeper. I am not sure it is
any more vibration or white noise than in other cabins....I wasn't in them
to compare. This cabin faces directly aft. The window looks out across
a small deck which is only steps away from the room through an aft door.
This is almost like a private balcony as there is never anyone out there.
I liked going out that back door and taking the outside stairs up to the
Lido deck.

Amsterdam Cabin 3331, Cat C, OV Lower Promenade Deck
We booked a guarantee Cat C room for our Panama Canal cruise Dec 2009
and were assigned 3331 about 10 days before departure, a Cat C room, so
no upgrade. But it was a very good location, starboard, just behind
the atrium elevators and next to the atrium - actually next to an office
on the atrium. We were one stateroom from the door to the outside
and enjoyed being so close the the great promenade walk-around deck.
The view from our window across the promenade deck was still good, though
we had a post in part of our view. I took pictures through the window
of ships in the canal lock next to us. It was fun. We enjoyed the
chairs right outside our window every day.
The room itself I think is a little shorter than the standard OV, as
we had a 2 seat couch instead of a full 3 seat couch. But the convenient
and quiet location was worth it even on an extended cruise. The only
noise we had was that we would hear the outside door slam every now and
then but it was not disruptive to our experience.

This cabin is on the Lower Promenade deck with quick access to the
outside - it was great for our Alaskan cruise in September 2007. Even though
it was an obstructed outside cabin it was still nice to get some natural
light in the cabin. One cannot see into the cabin from the Lower Promenade
deck during the day but at night you had to keep the drapes drawn (the
cabin steward will do it when turning down the bed).
We did not hear anything through the connecting door. Sometimes we heard
some faint noises from the deck above us in the morning that may the galley
or another dining related area. Some mornings we heard them washing down
the deck and bulkheads.
We still enjoyed the room and would book a similar cabin again.

Outside D-Category Cabin, 6102, Verandah Deck, forward-facing. The
cabin with the beds together feels smaller. With the beds separated, there's
actually a useable amount of space. But ... it has two WONDERFUL forward
facing windows. Just barely enough storage space ... for two people. There
are two full closets, however. Cabin 6100, next door ... is actually larger.
The last photo is of the windows of my cabin: Verandah Deck Forward. Alaska
2009
[
IRL_Joanie's Note: May 2010 a question came up regarding the layout
of Staterooms 6100 and 6102. There seems to be a slight bit of confusion
from what the HAL Deck plan shows and actual photos. RevNeal was asked
and his response is:
[
The ship diagrams on the HAL web site are incorrect. Or, rather, they
are correct for the Rotterdam. But, in building the Amsterdam, HAL decided
to actually build that part of the ship
a little differently and the difference in actual construction resulted
in a difference from the published ship deck-plans that has never been
corrected.
[
I have stayed in 6102 aboard the Amsterdam, and have also walked into
and looked around 6100, and can confirm without any doubt that there is
NO "shared" hallway for the two cabins. Instead, 6102 has its own little
hallway that one walks through to get into the cabin. It takes one past
the bathroom module and turns left to enter the sitting area of the cabin
proper. 6100, on the other hand, has no hallway at all. Both cabins have
independent doors that open onto the main corridor running port-and-starboard
at the very front of the ship just bellow the bridge on the port side of
the vessel. If one faces both doors and turns to the left there is a public-access
hatch leading outside onto the Verandah Forward observation deck. It is,
by far, one of the best locations aboard ship for scenic cruising.

verandah B 6118 on the Amsterdam. It is right above the "DAM" letters
written on the outside of the ship so very easy to identify from outside.
We had two single beds to start, but they were changed into a king. Note
this
room has a shower only, which is about the same size as the tub
in regular rooms. The red leather couch was a little tired so may have
been replaced (These pics taken May, 2008). Great room though

We arranged the furniture due to the kids & 5 of us in the room.
The room was great. Clean & spotless. Exactly as described & pictured
in the brochure. The room & verandah were actually more spacious than
what we had imagined after reading the brochure (not sure why-- but w/
us traveling w/ the kids - I guess I might have still been imagining cramped
quarters). We had 2 pak n plays at the foot of our bed and still lots of
room to move around (we have also had 2 pak n plays in a 180 sf room and
have been satisfied so we are easy to please from that standpoint). The
6 year old slept on the leather sofa-- we found that it was just as comfortable
& easier from a space standpoint to have the steward make up his bed
on top of the couch vs pulling out the sleeper sofa. We did rearrange some
of the furniture w/ stewards approval to accommodate the twins and not
smashing their heads on the glass coffee table or breaking the flower vase
( we have done this on probably every cruise-- one cruise in our 180 sf
room the steward actually took away the coffee table).
TONS of storage-- We could have brought 4 more suitcases to fill all
of the drawers & storage space-- honestly I think 50% of our storage
space was not used and this includes one closet solely housing our double
stroller and another w/ froggy their bathtub for the cruise ( 7051
didn't have a bathtub (IRL_Joanie's Note: Shower
Only)-- sorry no pics of the bathroom).
He had our steward empty our fridge so we could put water & milk
cartons for the little ones inside.
Great lighting, didn't use the hairdryer, comfortable chairs and bed.
The room decor was great & well kept minus the cigarette burns to the
carpet & furniture. Lots of hangers-- too many in fact w/ the laundry
service we had to keep sending them back. Great to have the menus each
day-- but with the sale advertisements and everything else-- I felt like
we were at home receiving junk mail and wasting trees. Alarm clock., TV
& DVD player worked great. Didn't bring an IPOD and never got around
to hooking anything into the TV so no comment on able or not.
Location-- we loved it. easy access to aft elevators and also to back
exit w/ stairs up to Lido deck. Little bit of a walk to Neptune lounge
but we have been used to much larger ships so seemed like a short walk
to us. I would definitely prefer SB aft vs SA forward-- as we were so conveniently
close to the aft elevators for lido restaurant, main dining rooms, kings
room, Club HAL, pool, sports deck, etc.-- for us the majority of what occupied
our time was in the aft-- we did go to the shows, spa & gym-- but still
would have preferred aft fs forward.
We did have vibration noise briefly once-- this was resolved with DH
placing some cotton balls behind one of the picture frames to prevent the
clanking noise. Otherwise there was the normal ship vibration that we felt
anywhere forward, aft or midship but not a nuisance to us.
No noise from chairs being moved on the deck above as others has posted-
but this was alaska. However it was August and we did have exceptional
weather and the roof was frequently open- but still no noise from above.
We did have trouble with our door not locking for 3 days and one other
room maintenance issue- but these were resolved within an hour after advising
the hotel manager (came back to our room twice to have it not locked).
Laundry service-- excellent haven't worn a pair of pressed pants for
about 15 years and likely won't again until we cruise HAL. We sent laundry
off every 24-48 hours and was always returned within 24 hours. Same with
dry-cleaning. They did lose a couple of articles of clothing but located
them once I let them know description of what was missing- I had read posts
before on keeping track of the items you send- otherwise I likely would
have never known they were missing- I don't think it was intentional seeing
as it was the 2nd socks to a pair, toddler clothing, etc.
Neptune service- excellent, Steward- excellent. They did forget our
corsages on formal night but sent us a lovely bouquet of flowers instead.

Stateroom Description only: I don't have a picture but
I can tell you that we were very disappointed in the room. When you walk
into the room, the bathroom is on the left and has a small shower...no
tub. On the right is the desk and the TV sits ON the desk so you will not
have much space...just enough for a laptop. To the right of the desk are
three VERY small closets. They are approx.18 inches wide, at the most!
One of the three is actually a half closet with a safe. There are three
draws under the desk. There is no chair in the room and no room for a chair!
There is a stool which opens for storage.
When you walk into the cabin, the bed is in front of you and to the
right. The bathroom "cubicle" extends approximately 6 feet toward the back
wall on your left. Between the cubicle and the back wall is a love seat
that juts out about 2 feet. There is no way that two people can watch the
tv on the loveseat...one person will be facing the wall to the bathroom!!
Another issue with the room is the window. During the day, no one can
see in; HOWEVER, at night anyone can see in unless you close the curtain.
Also, if you have trouble sleeping with lights on, please know that on
the back deck there are some VERY BRIGHT lights that are on all night.
If you are only in the cabin for a week or so, this room is ok. It is
in a great location for the back swimming pool and cafe. It is quiet at
night unless someone goes out the back doors to the deck! Beware...the
doors are heavy and they slam constantly!
We were in the cabin for 84 days!! Definitely not enough room for two
people. The worst thing was that my agent charged the same rate as HAL
published!! This room is really meant for one person.
By the way, we did a cabin crawl and looked at many other cabins. This
room had less closet/storage space than any other cabin we saw. Even inside
cabins have more room! (IRL_Joanie's Note: This is an
aft partial view.)
