I shared this room with 2 granddaughters ages 15 and 10. The 10 y/o slept up on the pull down upper berth. The room worked very well for us. The kids loved the portholes. The portholes were about 14-18" deep from the room to the outside, so looking out was a bit like looking through binoculars.
This room was forward starboard on Dolphin deck. No real heavy seas, so no real motion or wave action or splashing. The ventilation was not great. Sometimes the room was cold, sometimes warm and stuffy. The thermostate on the wall was more of a decoration. But the temperature range was not terribly uncomfortable either way, we just adjusted our clothing a bit.
The 3 seat sofa was great, as was the adjustable table. We did room service breakfast 2 or 3 days. We had a refrigerator under the desk for special foods for the 15 yr olds complex food allergy issues. The tub worked well for the girls who were used to taking showers in a tub at home. There were 4 closets so plenty of room for us to arrange our clothes.
I had to put sofa pillows on the floor at night around the ladder for the upper berth because I kept stubbing my toes! But I think the upper birth was much better than having the couch made up as a bed.
1815 is a Cat H room, which we chose at booking
because we needed 2 rooms together. Booked about 9 weeks in advance

We stayed in room 1817 on the Dolphin Deck (the
cheap seats). This was the most disappointing part of our trip. So there
are 4 of us….2 twin beds – we asked they be put together, but they weren’t,
and the drop down bunk bed….and then the couch that pulls out. The couch
didn’t pull out and there was a giant sinkhole in the center of it – pulling
up the cushion we noticed all the boards were busted. So where was my son
going to sleep? That first night we made do and we had him sleep up in
the window. So the next morning we removed the cushion from the couch to
show them that it was busted. When we returned later after breakfast, the
couch was made up like normal – with no fix. We talked to our steward about
this on day 3 and he said he put in a note to get this fixed. Day 4 I’m
good and ticked – I paid for sleeping for 4 people and I have my son sleeping
in a window sill, I am not getting my ice bucket filled, and the “we’ll
gladly keep you stocked with fruit” never happened. So I politely call
the number on the card and I ask being a new cruiser what my expectation
should be…for getting the couch fixed…getting ice….and getting fruit. She
doesn’t quite answer me but tells me she will route to the appropriate
person. I got a voice mail from someone who said the couch would be fixed
that day. Then my steward comes by and he’s ticked with me and said that
I “complained” about him, I said no, I didn’t complain, I wanted to know
what my expectation should be. He said he’s not 24 hours and when do I
want my ice. And that if I want fruit I can always go and get all I want
from the Lido. I had just heard from 2 cruisers last week before we sailed
– they were on Carnival and Princess however – raving about how they keep
you stocked with ice and fruit so I thought it was standard. Day 5 – still
busted couch. So I go to see the person that left me the voice mail. I
tell her my son is sleeping in a window sill, my steward told me to fetch
my own fruit if I want it – LOL, etc. She said she would have the couch
taken care of within 2 hours – and it was. And I got a rotting banana from
my steward the next day. I have to mention here too, that on day 6 we received
a bottle of wine and some chocolates and a note from the guest relations
person for our troubles….we don’t drink wine…I’m still ticked…but it was
a nice gesture.

The room was TINY, no sofa, no table, small desk, 3 small wardrobes instead of 4. Narrower than normal cabin (no room to talk along one side of the queen bed). The bathroom was HUGE, with a Giant Door that took up all the floor space when opened. The bathroom had a huge shower, no bath tub. No shelf under the sink, no step up into the bathroom. Instead, there was a special drain just inside the bathroom in front of the door.
Also, the air conditioning vent was inside the bathroom! We had to prop the giant door open to get AC!
Upon entering the cabin, we were immediately disappointed. This room is the furthest forward (nearest the bow) of any room on the ship. The bulkhead curves inward very sharply. This causes a gap of 3 to 4 feet from the end of the room to the portholes and removes this amount of floor space from the main cabin. This means the room has no sofa, a shorter-than-normal desk with no stool, no privacy curtain across the foot of the bed, no table, and 3 small wardrobes instead of 4 (which all or most INSIDE ROOMS DO HAVE. It is also narrower than the other cabins and only had one small dresser next to the queen sized bed instead of two and there was insufficient space to walk on the other side of the bed. I measured the room and found the cabin to be about 117 square feet including the storage spaces and desk, and the bathroom to be about 48 square feet. The whole cabin is at most 165 square feet (much smaller than the less-expensive inside rooms).
The portholes are there but largely unusable due to the 3 to 4 foot bulkhead separation from the end of the cabin. You cannot get near the glass. It looks like two beady eyes looking out of the ship and no good view is to be had at all.
Since it is a handicapped cabin, it has very wide doors to allow for a wheelchair. This means that the small floor space available in the middle of the cabin was virtually wiped out by the very wide door to the bathroom. The bathroom is huge. It has an enormous shower and no tub. It is also missing the usual shelf under the sink. A LOT of the cabin space ended up as the bathroom.
Because this room was very far forward, it magnified the effects of the waves. Unfortunately for us, when we left Sydney Harbor, we were greeted by "Very Rough Seas" of 12-18 feet. I had never been seasick before but I was EXTREMELY seasick that night.
This is a great room if there are no high seas, there is only one person occupying the room—if you pay the inside room rate (less cabin, but some light).
Hope this helps folks from getting a rude surprise!
Also a “heads up” for those selecting a “guarantee.”

These are photos from our first cruise on the
Volendam. The cabin is K2604. They were taken September 2008.
The cabin was quiet, and close to the launderette. It was our first
cruise- so we had nothing to compare it to.

I 7086 one of the "inside/outside" cat I cabins. Classified as an Inside
Stateroom but has a Window.
I loved this cabin! The location is stellar -- right by the exterior door to a small deck which spans the width of the ship, and right beside the steps up to the aft lido deck for wide open views. This location was great for Alaska; the captain would call out a nature sighting and we'd be outside in seconds, looking. We liked this cabin so much that we have both it and its mate booked for next summer in case we decide to do a round trip from Vancouver with my MIL (we're pricing one ways as our preference, but booked these so we'd be sure of having these particular cabins if we wind up doing a round trip for price reasons).
The only real "downsides" -- no bathtub (which is why it's a HAL interior level cabin), one end of the sofa is stuck in a small alcove so really only one end of it is useful (we stored our luggage back there), and there's not a lot of counter space. We think it's still a great deal and wonderful cabin for 2 people. Photos taken 2006 and 2008

Volendam from Rev. Neal's Panama Canal Cruise, November 2007 - Inside
(but with a window ... how weird!) aft-facing I-Category 7086, Navigation

window ...... located all the way aft on the Verandah Deck. It's shape
is very weird. (IRL_Joanie's Note: That is a 2 seat Sofa
