On Eurodam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Westerdam, Oosterdam, Prinsendam, Zuiderdam: Every single Stateroom has a cooler (HAL does not like to use the word refrigerator as they don't get as cool as some medicines that require "refrigeration" need... but they will get beverages cold...)

It was great! Little sound from folks walking and talking outside our cabin. When in Port it was very easy to be first off without waiting in line or leaving just after the herd of folks left the ship. Very little rocking, only heard water slapping a couple of times. The window is the only thing we missed. Sorry we did not take any photo's. But loved our "Well appointed Closet" as my DH called it Light behind the curtain at the head of the bed made you feel like you had a window there. Lots of storage, Nice size shower, Extra long couch that would make out into a bed if we needed it. Not much motion, had looked forward to rocking to sleep. Very quiet room, no hallway chatter or pattering around. And had the best in bed massage when the anchor was dropped. It was kind of fun, worked as an alarm clock, (IRL_Joanie's Note: This stateroom is located at the Fore (Front) of the ship.)

Gratitude is the word that comes to mind when I think about the room. I had originally booked an M category midship inside stateroom on the Dolphin deck (lowest deck). There were many reasons for this ... financially as a solo it made sense, having lupus makes me somewhat of a vampire anyhow so I am used to lack of natural light, and I also wanted to up my chances of a smooth ride with little sea whooziness. When I was contacted by a Holland America agent one day before my departure re a paid upgrade opportunity, I had to seriously consider (I know, I know - most people would jump at the chance; but being unable to travel for the last couple of years has made me take more precautions than usual). End result, I moved to an outside category D stateroom one deck up, even more solidly midship for less than $100. I recognize that this was huge and not only did it allow me to see many interesting & surprising things from the window when I was too tired to roam anbout, but it also allowed me to meet the best room stewards ever. I believe the cabin sizes would have been roughly the same. I did not expect the stateroom or bathroom to be as roomy as they were, even though I had looked at numerous photos beforehand. I've traveled the world and lived in some fairly tight spaces - I could have easily been at home in this room for a couple of months! There is just the right amount of storage space for two (if not packed extravagantly) and the pulled back curtains act as a room seperator between the bed and the couch / sitting area and again to the "hall" to the bathroom. It was a fairly comfortable bed, better than average hotel quality and I had no trouble sleeping at night (excepting when being awaoke by loud hollow booming sounds which I later found to be the waves crashing against the side of the ship). Joannie, feel free to use - it is rm 2606. You may notice from the photos that I had a refrigerator rental under the desk where a dressing stool would normally go. Temperature control was so good in the room that I didn't need the frig - which made terribly annoying noises - so I asked it to be removed after a few days and felt comfortable keeping my meds in a closet. Unlike some reports on this board, I never personally had a problem with the temperature. Each room has an individual hvac control with a range of blue to red for cooler or warmer (for those wondering, it cannot be switched off). One continued annoyance... I had much difficulty opening my door - even with some "strong" days onboard the handle was stubborn. Supposedly a locksmith was called to fix it during a port day but it never got any easier to handle. I felt sorry for the room service porters trying to carry a tray full of empty plates and glasses through the tight space and struggling with the door every time! Also, my room card kept getting deactivated (2x) even though I was careful to keep it in a seperate pocket from my iphone. And lastly, I had one unfortunate experience where I got up in the morning and the toilet decided it would no longer flush - but a plumber fixed that while we were docked in Sitka and it was fine for the rest of the trip. I wouldn't be surprised if every cabin's toilet stopped working once during a week - the fact that the vessel can handle that amount of plumbing and electricity and desalinated water and food coming and going - it's a sheer miracle that it all takes place as well as it does!

As you can likely tell from the deck plans, 6100 is NOT a standard room. In actuality, it's a little larger, has some unique angles and as long as a loveseat or sofa isn't a dealbreaker for you, this room is well furnished and VERY spacious. In fact, I have already decided that if on an S/R Class ship and this room (or its neighbor 6102 with TWO windows) is available and I'm booking an oceanview room, I will happily take this one and reject the possibility of further upgrades. B 6116 Verandah Stateroom    Deck 6 Verandah Deck
[
6116 (port forward) which is about 220 sq feet with a 60 sq foot veranda, plenty deep for a lounger, a regular chair and small cocktail table. The cabin is long and narrow and has in addition to a king bed; a desk with TV/DVD player and shelves for books and barware. The ice bucket sits on the desk surface. The desk has a small hassock with a removable top that can be used for additional storage (laundry?) and a single 110V outlet. Do bring a power strip or you can get one from the front office. Opposite the desk is a couch and minifridge, a coffee table that can be raised to dining table height and a small chair. Even on deck 6, there can be some salt spray especially when it is windy. I did have to clean the dried salt off the railings and glass partition a few times. Cabin 6116 is near the bow so we did get a bit of motion as well as spray the first day or so. The bathroom is compact but has adequate shelf space and countertop along with a shelf beneath the sink for additional storage. The built-in hairdryer did not work in our cabin and a separate handheld dryer was provided in the desk drawer (of which there are 9). More than adequate closet space completes the room layout. We chose the port side since we would be passing Kilauea on that side after leaving Kona, our last port.

The twin beds are WONDERFUL, they can be put together, making a wide queen size. The Verandah is deep and wide enough for two people.

We sailed on the Zaandam 1/21 in verandah cabin A7036 which accommodates 3 people - you can see from the pix that the sofa opens to a single bed, not a double/queen. Left more room for moving around, but cramped for 3 people (adults). Separated beds are narrow (30") and the mattress pad was folded such that it created a slight arch - we found ourselves trying to keep our balance (not fall out of bed) when the seas were rough or even a little active - peculiar, but we managed by laying on our backs more than our sides, which is when we encountered the problem. Also are pix of the bathroom, safe and outlet (one regular -- the round one on the left is for the hairdryer). We used a surge protector we brought with us, okayed by the cabin steward. There were a total of 13 drawers plus 4 closets, some with shelves, so plenty of storage. There are locks on 2 of the drawers in the cabin, but no keys - when we asked for keys, they couldn't find even the master key and said those drawers/locks hadn't been used since the safes were put in. So we couldn't lock up all the cameras and the 2 laptops, but everything seemed to be safe, no losses (the cabin stewards were good about not leaving the door open/cabin unattended when cleaning).
